Biohydrogen production has been established as a prospective alternative and integral component of green sustainable energy. A challenging problem in making biohydrogen production a more economically feasible is the generation of large quantities of hydrogen gas. Compared with photosynthetic hydrogen production, fermentative hydrogen production has higher hydrogen production efficiency, higher hydrogen production stability, and higher feasibility for industrialization, simpler control requirement and lower operating costs. This method of hydrogen production becomes more economically viable when the process is combined with dark fermentation developed in the fermentation tanks used in high organic load waste water treatment processes.en_US
