Abstract: This paper presents a modified Particle Swarm Optimization approach for optimal placement and sizing of multi type FACTS devices to minimize the real power loss in the transmission system and thereby enhancing its voltage stability. The optimal placement, number, type of FACTS devices and its size are found out using comprehensive Learning Particle Swarm Optimization (CLPSO) and Social Learning Particle Swarm optimization (SLPSO) techniques. Using this approach the percentage of real power loss reduction for different types of FACTS devices placed at different locations is determined. Also, the voltage stability of the transmission line and load bus is assessed using Line Voltage Stability Index (LVSI) and Bus voltage stability index (BVSI). The multi type FACTS devices used in this work is SVC, TCSC and UPFC. The proposed technique is implemented in MATLAB platform and the results are compared with Particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach. The test systems considered are IEEE 14 bus system and IEEE 57 bus system. The analysis in this work reveals that SLPSO approach is best suitable for the enhancement of voltage stability in transmission system.
